Unit 78 digital graphics for computer games
File Extension
When creating assets for an image you have to use a certain storage file for the right sort of image/work size so an animation would more likely to be in a GIF, a picture would likely be in a Jpeg but it has a high storage. there are other files like PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD, GIF. So if you were making a highly detail sprite for games HUD you would need a PSD not a jpeg because it would be a more studio standard and there would be less unprofessional white or other remaining lines.
as you can see in the image on a TIFF and a JPG you can see the difference in residual with the highlighted white in the JPG.
compression
compression is when you make a file smaller by putting in a compressed file like .rar .zip. After you put it in the file other people can download it then use a unzip program to bring to it original size. It can be useful when downloading files for game that a team is developing they can download it edit it then compress it again when it is done and doesn't need to be used for now.
Image Capture
Image capture is methods of putting an image in a storage file so you can edit or just store.
There are other methods like scanning, using a camera, print screen, etc.
For example if some wanted to create a car for a game and they had to make it as realistic they would go to car shop take a picture and make a digital version of that in the game.
Optimising
Optimising is to make a image better by using image enhancing software to make it look more detail it normally used for professional companies when finishing or putting detail in a object that it's the most important thing like the characters or machinery/objects. But optimising can used for other things like artwork like when making a very detailed image you can optimise it to make the curves and corner more sharper and more crisp to look at.
Storage of Image Assets
Storage of image assets is basically the placement of image in certain file so like the background image in the proper storage file so it is clear for you and other people to find. While editing a image if you were using Photoshop you would save it just as a PSD until it is finished then you would save it as JPEG. also when saving game asset in folders you would have to label it as the certain object so that other people working on the game/image can find it easily to edit it to the next steps that the picture needs.
